Julwin's Adopts a Smoke Free EnvironmentBaldwin Counties Oldest Restaurant Ends Smoking after 60 yearsMarch 1, 2006 -- Fairhope, AL After 60 years Julwin's has changed its long standing policy which allowed smoking in this landmark restaurant. Amid increasing numbers of municipalities legislating smoking bans, Julwin's Restaurant in downtown Fairhope for over 60 years has adopted a smoke-free environment. "It was not an easy decision," said John Lapeyrouse, the owner of the restaurant. "We had to weigh the needs of all of our customers. The fact is, we could not provide a suitable environment for families with children or the elderly that are most susceptible to smoking ailments. The old building was not designed to provide an effective separation between smokers and non-smokers." The new policy was enacted during the early stages of a restaurant remodeling. "We are sad that we lost a few of our regular customers, that have every right to smoke. I wish that we could have provided an environment that would have made everyone comfortable," said Lapeyrouse, "but the old building was just not designed that way. The response has been very positive from the community and the number of families that are dining with us has increased dramatically." This is the first step in a plan to restore the restaurant to regional prominence.
